Jane’s Mother: Jane Gibson
Jane Gibson was a healer, and mother of Jane Gibson Evans. As a Native American Indian, Jane was free to earn money as a healer to Shirley Plantation, and actually treated the enslaver Carter for dropsy.
Jane’s Husband: Morris Evans
Morris Evans was a Free Person of Color. Some of his 21st Century male descendants have traced their yDNA to an African man. This contradicts the documentation of his paternal lineage to Wales.
Jane’s Children
Morris and Jane married in Charles City County, Virginia. Under the colony’s law, Jane’s children inherited their mother’s freedom. This law remained in place during the early years of the United States. However, the freedom was some of her grandchildren was taken away.
Jane had three daughters and two sons. Around the time her husband died, her sons fled to freedom in North Carolina. Her daughters remained in Virginia. Their children were taken into indentured apprenticeship and then wrongfully enslaved. They never escaped.
